Uganda’s Financial Intelligence Authority (FIA) has received ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification for its Information Security Management System (ISMS), following an official handover by the National Information Technology Authority-Uganda (NITA-U).
The certification was presented at a ceremony officiated by Henry Musasizi, Uganda’s Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Economic Development. It recognises FIA’s adoption of an internationally recognised framework for identifying, managing and reducing information security risks while protecting sensitive organisational data.
FIA is among the selected ministries, departments and agencies participating in the World Bank-funded ISMS Implementation Project. The initiative is being implemented by NITA-U through the Uganda Digital Acceleration Project – Government Network (UDAP-GovNet), which supports the development of information security management capabilities across government institutions.
Speaking on behalf of NITA-U Executive Director Dr Hatwib Mugasa, Johnson Tumusiime, Acting Director of Information Security at NITA-U, congratulated FIA on securing the certification and described the achievement as an example for other public institutions.
Tumusiime emphasised that strengthening information security management systems across government agencies would contribute to improved data protection throughout the public sector. He also reaffirmed NITA-U’s commitment to supporting ministries, departments and agencies in developing the technical capabilities, organisational systems and skills required to protect government information.
The ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification is expected to strengthen FIA’s information security practices, improve stakeholder confidence and enhance its resilience against cybersecurity risks. The achievement is particularly significant given the authority’s responsibility for handling sensitive financial intelligence information, making the protection of its systems and data essential to maintaining operational integrity.
The milestone comes as Uganda continues expanding digital government services and strengthening cybersecurity and data protection measures across public institutions. FIA’s certification represents further progress towards establishing internationally recognised information security practices within the country’s public sector.
