MTN MoMo Uganda has partnered with C-Care Uganda’s IHK Hospital in Namuwongo to introduce digital payment services for healthcare, allowing patients and caregivers to settle medical bills using their mobile phones.
The collaboration aims to simplify hospital payment procedures by eliminating the need for patients and their families to queue at payment counters or move between departments to obtain proof of payment. Through the service, patients can complete transactions directly using MTN MoMo, making payments more convenient and efficient.
Under the arrangement, patients receive their hospital bills, provide their MTN mobile numbers and approve payment requests sent to their phones. Once authorised, transactions are immediately reflected in the hospital’s payment system, with confirmation sent directly to the payer.
Speaking at the launch, Jemima Kariuki-Njuguna, Chief Product Officer at MTN MoMo, said the company aims to integrate digital payments into everyday activities, including healthcare, shopping, travel and worship. The partnership reflects its broader efforts to extend mobile money services into essential sectors and simplify everyday transactions.
Dr Miriam Mutero-Musinga, General Manager of C-Care IHK, highlighted the importance of improving the patient experience, noting that simplifying payment procedures forms part of the hospital’s efforts to deliver quality healthcare.
The partnership is expected to reduce administrative processes for patients, caregivers and healthcare providers through faster transactions and immediate payment confirmation. It also extends MTN MoMo’s application beyond conventional consumer and merchant transactions into healthcare service delivery.
By integrating mobile money into hospital payment systems, the collaboration seeks to streamline administrative procedures and allow patients and their families to concentrate more on accessing healthcare services.
