The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regulatory collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) as Nigeria continues to develop its digital economy and data governance framework.
NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi made the commitment during a high-level courtesy visit to NDPC Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer Dr Vincent Olatunji at the Commission’s headquarters.
Abdullahi commended the NDPC for its progress since its establishment and highlighted NITDA’s role in pioneering Nigeria’s data privacy framework. He said stronger collaboration between the two institutions remains important as digital transformation accelerates and the need to protect citizens’ data and strengthen digital trust grows.
He also reaffirmed NITDA’s strategic support for the NDPC and emphasised the importance of keeping Nigeria’s data governance standards aligned with global best practices.
Olatunji expressed appreciation for NITDA’s continued support, particularly during the NDPC’s transition from an internal unit within NITDA to an independent regulatory commission.
The NDPC chief also reflected on the development of Nigeria’s privacy and data protection framework, from the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) to the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023.
Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to closer integration and continued cooperation to strengthen Nigeria’s privacy and data protection environment and support a safe, secure and resilient digital economy.
The engagement highlights the continued role of regulatory coordination in protecting personal data, strengthening digital trust and supporting Nigeria’s wider digital transformation.
