OpenAI has introduced “dots”, a new type of always-on AI agent designed to work continuously on behalf of users.
According to OpenAI, each dot runs on GPT-6 Astra and operates through its own cloud computer and browser. The agents can learn from user feedback, maintain context across tasks and pursue goals continuously, including while working in the background.
Users can interact with their dots through ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, as well as through Slack, Microsoft Teams and voice calls. OpenAI says text messaging support is also planned. Through a plugin ecosystem, dots can connect with more than 4,000 applications.
OpenAI describes dots as an extension of the user, capable of carrying out tasks based on established preferences and workflows. Examples include investigating software bugs, turning designs into working applications, updating product materials and preparing business documents.
The company highlights use cases across software development, product management, scientific research, sales and content creation. Dots can reportedly process feedback, rerun analyses as new data becomes available, update proposals and generate content from source materials.
OpenAI has also outlined several controls designed to keep users involved in consequential actions. Each dot operates on a separate cloud computer unless the user chooses to connect it to their own machine. Background work is restricted to read-only tools, while Custom Rules can determine which actions are allowed, require approval or are blocked.
Users can monitor activity through an Activity View, while an auto-review system checks certain actions that could affect accounts or share information. OpenAI says sensitive actions, including password changes, remain under user control and warns that dots can still make mistakes and that consequential work should be reviewed.
For organisations, OpenAI is previewing “specialist dots” designed for dedicated responsibilities and access to company systems. The company is beginning with focused enterprise pilots covering areas such as procurement, invoice processing, customer support, email marketing and commercial contracting.
OpenAI says dots are rolling out to Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, while Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare users can access a beta when enabled by their workspace administrators. The company says the first dot is included with the applicable plan at no additional cost.
