Nigeria’s Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched a Zero-Rated Access to Educational Platforms Initiative aimed at reducing data-cost barriers to digital learning across the country.
Developed in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, the initiative will provide zero-rated access to approved digital education platforms and learning resources. The programme is intended to enable students and other learners to access online educational content without data costs becoming a major obstacle.
The launch brought together stakeholders from government, academia, the communications and education sectors, as well as student representatives. The gathering focused on strengthening cooperation between key stakeholders to expand access to technology-enabled education.
A panel discussion during the launch examined the initiative’s vision, implementation approach and potential benefits for learners. Participants also explored how collaboration between the education and communications sectors could help ensure that zero-rated access creates sustainable and meaningful impact.
The initiative comes as Nigeria continues to expand the use of digital technologies in education. By reducing the cost associated with accessing approved online learning resources, the NCC aims to support more inclusive participation in digital education.
The regulator said the initiative represents another step towards making digital learning more accessible, particularly by addressing data affordability as one of the barriers that can limit learners’ access to online educational content.
