Equity Bank Rwanda has launched EMMA, a digital wallet that allows customers to make payments, transfer money, save towards personal goals and access credit subject to eligibility.

The platform expands the bank’s digital financial services beyond conventional bank accounts. It connects to Rwanda’s interoperable payments network, including eKash Group, MTN MoMo, Airtel Money and participating banks.

Customers can register using an active mobile number and accepted identification without opening an Equity Bank account. EMMA is accessible through its mobile application or by dialling 5556# on supported networks.

Several services carry no transaction fees, including transfers between EMMA users and to Equity accounts, payments at PWE tills and eKash-connected merchants, deposits through approved agents and airtime purchases. Transfers to supported banks and mobile wallets cost RWF 20.

Equity Bank Rwanda Managing Director Hannington Namara said the wallet aims to move financial inclusion beyond access towards improved savings and financial health.

He cited FinScope 2024 figures showing that 96% of Rwandan adults are financially included, while only 22% hold bank accounts and 10% are considered financially healthy.

Namara said EMMA’s success would be measured through active usage and stronger saving habits rather than downloads alone. He added that the bank wants customers to use their money in ways that improve their financial wellbeing.

Customer transaction activity could also inform eligibility assessments for overdrafts and short-term loans, subject to approval and disclosed terms.
