South Africa is positioning itself to play a larger role in Africa’s growing artificial intelligence infrastructure ecosystem through a strategic partnership between Stratos Lab, ECOBLOX and Digital Parks Africa.
The collaboration will see the deployment of what the partners describe as Africa’s most powerful AI Cloud, delivering 7.2 EFLOPS of sovereign AI computing capacity. The infrastructure will be powered by more than 50 high-performance NVIDIA B300 HGX GPU servers, comprising over 400 GPUs supplied through the GIGABYTE ecosystem.
The initiative is designed to address some of the key infrastructure challenges facing AI development and deployment across Africa. These include high-density power requirements, advanced cooling needs and the lengthy lead times often associated with acquiring and deploying specialised AI hardware.
ECOBLOX will provide AI infrastructure integration, modular infrastructure and cloud software capabilities, supporting the design, deployment and management of GPU clusters. Stratos Lab will lead high-performance computing and cloud orchestration services, offering infrastructure designed for AI model training, inference and managed platform services.
Digital Parks Africa will provide the physical data centre infrastructure needed to support ultra-dense AI workloads, including resilient power management and carrier-neutral colocation facilities. Giga Computing, part of the GIGABYTE Group, will support the deployment with GPU-centric server technologies.
The partners say the locally deployed infrastructure could enable African businesses, developers and institutions to access advanced computing capacity closer to their data and markets. This could help reduce latency, lower operational costs and support the development of AI applications for regional and global markets.
The deployment also reflects a broader shift towards sovereign AI infrastructure, where countries and regions seek greater control over the computing resources needed to develop, train and deploy advanced artificial intelligence systems.
As demand for high-performance computing continues to grow, the partnership could strengthen South Africa’s position as a regional hub for AI infrastructure while contributing to the expansion of advanced computing capacity across the African continent.
