Google is expanding its student-focused AI offering with free access to its AI plans for eligible college students, alongside new Gemini tools designed to support learning, research and exam preparation.
Eligible college students in the United States can receive one year of Google AI Pro at no cost, a package valued at $19.99 per month. The plan includes higher usage limits in Gemini, access to Gemini Spark, integration with Google services such as Gmail and Google Docs, 5TB of storage and other premium features.
For eligible college students outside the US, Google is offering one year of Google AI Plus for free. The plan includes access to Gemini Omni, higher usage limits in Gemini and 400GB of storage.
Google is also offering discounted bundles combining Google AI Pro with YouTube Premium, with savings of up to 70% for students seeking ad-free music and video streaming.
Alongside the student subscriptions, Google has introduced a dedicated student hub within the Gemini app. The hub brings together student-focused AI tools, allowing users to create study notebooks, generate flashcards, take practice quizzes and access additional learning features as they become available.
Google is also expanding its study notebooks feature, which enables students to upload class materials such as lecture notes and receive structured study plans based on their own coursework.
The feature can generate diagnostic quizzes to identify knowledge gaps, create customised lessons and quizzes, and provide a real-time progress dashboard to help students track their learning.
In the coming weeks, study notebooks will also gain graphs and images within lessons. With student permission, Gemini will be able to identify important dates such as examinations and assignment deadlines from a syllabus and add them to Google Calendar.
Students with Google AI Plus or Google AI Pro will also be able to create additional notebooks using more sources, expanding the amount of coursework they can incorporate into their AI-assisted study workflows.
Google is further expanding Gemini’s interactive visualisation capabilities, allowing students to explore subjects through functional 3D simulations and other visual learning elements. For example, students can request interactive demonstrations of biological structures such as DNA and explore them by rotating and zooming.
Another update is coming to Gemini Live, allowing students to discuss problem sets and study materials stored in Google Drive through conversational interactions. Integration with Deep Research will also enable users to initiate more comprehensive, multi-step research reports through voice conversations.
Google said Gemini can conduct research asynchronously in the background, allowing students to leave the conversation and continue with other activities while a report is prepared. Users are notified when the report is ready and can then discuss the findings, ask follow-up questions or refine the research through conversation.
The company is positioning the expanded tools as a personalised study companion that can help students organise coursework, understand complex subjects, conduct research and prepare for examinations using their own learning materials.
The expansion reflects the growing integration of generative AI into education, with Google targeting tools that combine personalised learning, research assistance, interactive visualisation and productivity features within the Gemini ecosystem.
