Astria Learning, a global education technology company, has partnered with Makerere University, Uganda’s oldest and largest higher education institution, to launch a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) e-Campus. The initiative marks a major step toward reshaping higher education across Africa, integrating AI to enhance access, collaboration, and innovation in postgraduate learning and research.

Launched during the biennial African Research Universities Alliance meeting, the AI e-Campus is being hailed as a transformative model for how the continent will learn, research, and generate knowledge in the future. By integrating advanced AI systems into academic delivery, the platform seeks to make postgraduate education more accessible and efficient while enabling African universities to become global leaders in AI-driven innovation.

Dr. Jeff Bordes, CEO of Astria Learning, described education as Africa’s inheritance and “the most powerful bridge between potential and prosperity.” He noted that the AI e-Campus would empower the next generation of African thinkers, researchers, and leaders to create opportunities rather than wait for them. This vision aligns closely with Astria’s long-standing mission to leverage technology in advancing education across emerging markets.

Makerere University’s vice chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, emphasized the university’s commitment to expanding its reach through digital learning. He noted that the partnership with Astria Learning would enhance the university’s research-led agenda by attracting graduate scholars from around the world. This strategic collaboration enables Makerere to offer high-quality graduate training beyond geographical borders, supporting a more inclusive and globally connected academic environment.

The AI e-Campus will also serve as the foundation for a continental platform that promotes postgraduate learning and research collaboration across Africa. By harnessing AI to power borderless education, the initiative supports the African Union’s goal of producing 100,000 new PhDs by 2035, a key pillar of Agenda 2063. With operations in 16 countries, Astria Learning continues to demonstrate its commitment to transforming education and equipping African institutions for the future of digital learning and research.
