Airtel Africa Foundation, in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Cisco, and the Rwanda Information Society Authority (RISA), has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide and enhancing national capacity through digital skills development in Rwanda. This strategic partnership seeks to empower underserved communities by providing free internet connectivity and training through the Digital Transformation Centres (DTC) initiative, directly supporting the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Rwanda’s national vision of becoming a knowledge-based economy.
With 900 million people across Africa still unconnected, this initiative plays a crucial role in accelerating digital inclusion and ensuring no one is left behind in the digital age. RISA emphasized the importance of prioritizing access to technology and digital education, especially for young people, who are central to driving the continent’s digital future. The program places children and youth at the forefront, equipping them with essential tools and knowledge to thrive in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
The Digital Transformation Centres will play a transformative role in delivering AI education and digital literacy to communities that have historically lacked access. By enabling young people to learn and engage with next-generation technologies, this initiative not only boosts their skills but positions Rwanda as a regional leader in digital innovation. The effort complements national initiatives such as Connect Rwanda, which promotes smartphone accessibility and digital service expansion in underserved regions.
Each partner brings a crucial element to the success of this initiative. The ITU is providing world-class digital skills content and regional capacity development resources, offering networking opportunities to promote digital inclusivity and knowledge sharing. Airtel Africa Foundation, through Airtel Rwanda, will supply free routers, Wi-Fi, and data packages to Digital Transformation Centres, enabling effective delivery of digital training and access to educational platforms.
This collaborative effort stands as a powerful demonstration of the impact made when government entities, private sector leaders, and international organizations unite for a shared vision. Speaking on the partnership, Sujay Chakrabarti, Managing Director of Airtel Rwanda, highlighted its role in empowering communities and transforming futures. ITU leadership further noted that this initiative will lay the foundation for broader regional adoption, with the potential to scale across Africa. This alliance not only sets Rwanda ahead in digital transformation but also serves as an inspiring model for inclusive technological progress throughout the continent.
