Africa’s digital revolution will take centre stage later this month in Rwanda as President Paul Kagame officially opens MWC25 Kigali on October 21. This marks the third consecutive year that President Kagame inaugurates the GSMA-led summit—one of the continent’s most influential technology and innovation gatherings. Hosted at the Kigali Convention Centre, the event will convene government leaders, global tech executives, start-up innovators, and policymakers from across Africa and beyond to explore how technology continues to reshape societies and economies.

This year’s edition will focus on four major themes—Connected Continent, The AI Future, Fintech, and Africa’s Digital Frontier—framing discussions on how digital transformation can unlock inclusive growth across Africa. Vivek Badrinath, Director General of the GSMA, expressed the organisation’s honour in welcoming President Kagame once again, noting that MWC Kigali remains a powerful platform for shaping Africa’s digital ambitions through collaboration between the public and private sectors.

MWC25 introduces new features designed to strengthen dialogue and innovation across the continent. The GSMA Ministerial Programme will provide an exclusive platform for African policymakers to engage on pressing issues such as digital regulation, AI ethics, and cross-border digitalisation. Meanwhile, the Orange Social Ventures Prize will celebrate outstanding social innovators from Africa and the Middle East, and the Future of Education & Work in Africa forum will bring together thought leaders to examine how AI can redefine learning and employment for the next generation.

Building on the momentum of MWC24—which focused on bridging Africa’s connectivity gap and empowering youth-led start-ups—this year’s summit signals a deeper shift toward AI adoption, fintech scaling, and secure 5G implementation as catalysts for continental growth. Under President Kagame’s leadership, Rwanda has become a symbol of digital progress, pioneering e-government services, fostering a vibrant start-up ecosystem, and launching Africa’s first drone-powered delivery network—demonstrating the transformative power of innovation when guided by visionary leadership.

As the GSMA collaborates with major industry players including Huawei, MTN, ZTE, Orange, and the Rwandan Ministry of ICT and Innovation, MWC25 Kigali reaffirms Africa’s readiness to lead in the global digital economy. The event is not only a celebration of technological advancement but also a call to ensure that innovation works for every African, driving inclusive growth and sustainable development across the continent.
