Airtel Uganda, in collaboration with MOGO Uganda and Transsion Holdings, has launched a groundbreaking smartphone financing initiative to bridge the digital divide and make quality mobile devices accessible to more Ugandans. This initiative directly addresses the “device divide” – a major barrier preventing millions from fully participating in Uganda’s growing digital economy.
Through this partnership, customers can now own brand-new smartphones from top brands such as Tecno, Infinix, and Itel through an easy and affordable financing plan. The process is simple: visit a MOGO Uganda retailer or select Airtel Service Centers, present a National ID, make a small initial deposit, and walk away with a smartphone within minutes. Each customer also receives 3GB of free Airtel data every month for three months, offering immediate value and connectivity.
At the launch, Som Soumendra, Managing Director of Airtel Uganda, emphasized the company’s ongoing commitment to digital inclusion and connectivity. He described the smartphone as a “lifeline to opportunity” and highlighted how Airtel’s strong, safe, and reliable network will continue to support Uganda’s digital journey. This initiative complements recent efforts such as the rollout of new network sites and the launch of Uganda’s first AI-powered Spam Alert Service.
Modestas Sudnius, CEO of Eleving Group (MOGO’s parent company), underscored their investment and ambition to double business in Uganda. He explained that smartphones are a gateway to global information and technology, and that expanding access can unlock economic potential, especially for Uganda’s young and dynamic population.
The program is projected to benefit over 360,000 Ugandans annually. It is expected to positively impact a wide range of users – from students engaging in online learning, to farmers tracking real-time market data, and entrepreneurs managing mobile-based businesses. This broad outreach will further embed smartphones into Uganda’s social and economic fabric.
This initiative is a prime example of how strategic partnerships and innovative financing models can drive digital transformation across Africa. By reducing the cost barrier and combining it with robust network support, Airtel Uganda and its partners are enabling meaningful access to the digital economy—one smartphone at a time.
