Cameroon has taken a bold step towards transforming its agricultural sector with the conclusion of its inaugural Agritech Innovation Challenge. This groundbreaking initiative celebrated 10 outstanding startups for their innovative solutions promoting digital inclusion and modernization in agriculture. Held in Yaoundé, the event highlighted Cameroon’s commitment to leveraging technology to revolutionize its agropastoral sector and address critical challenges.
The Agritech Innovation Challenge forms part of the broader Project for the Acceleration of the Digital Transformation of Cameroon (PATNUC), a $100 million World Bank-supported initiative. The competition sought to foster competitiveness and innovation among startups by encouraging the development of digital solutions for agriculture, livestock, and fisheries. The outcome is a testament to Cameroon’s determination to integrate technology into its primary economic sectors.
From precision farming using artificial intelligence to climate change adaptation kits, the selected startups showcased a wide range of transformative ideas. Each of the 10 winners will receive cash prizes of up to CFA 40 million ($66,640) and technical support to implement their business plans. These resources will empower them to scale their operations and make a tangible impact in Cameroon’s agricultural ecosystem.
Minette Libom Li Likeng, Cameroon’s minister of posts and telecommunications, emphasized the significance of this initiative in discovering local talent and driving digital transformation in agriculture. She noted that the program also aims to stimulate self-employment in the digital sector, addressing the pressing issue of youth unemployment in the country. The government’s focus on agritech innovation reflects a strategic effort to harness the potential of technology for sustainable economic growth.
Among the winners was Bang Pamela Ncho, COO of eFarm.CM, whose e-commerce startup emerged as the overall champion. Her platform is designed to provide farmers with better market access and competitive prices while also offering logistics support for product distribution. Ncho’s vision underscores the importance of bridging the gap between farmers and markets to ensure equitable growth and development in the agropastoral sector.
Cameroon’s Agritech Innovation Challenge is a clear indication of the country’s readiness to embrace technology as a catalyst for change. By fostering digital innovation in agriculture, Cameroon is setting a precedent for other nations in Africa, paving the way for a future where technology and agriculture work hand in hand to achieve food security, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability.
