The Nigerian government is taking significant steps to enhance its technological landscape through a new partnership with Ericsson focused on 5G connectivity. On October 18, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during a visit by a Nigerian delegation led by Vice President Kashim Shettima at Ericsson’s Global headquarters in Sweden. This partnership signifies a commitment to advancing Nigeria’s digital transformation objectives and establishing a robust framework for 5G development and innovation.

The primary goal of the MoU is to foster cooperation between the Nigerian government and Ericsson Nigeria, concentrating on the development, deployment, and innovation of 5G technology. As Africa’s most populous country, accounting for over 15% of the continent’s population, Nigeria recognizes the transformative potential of 5G in driving economic growth and improving public services through advanced and secure connectivity.

Key elements of the partnership include technology sector knowledge exchange, capacity building, and support for the establishment of innovation hubs and tech incubators within Nigeria. Additionally, the collaboration aims to enhance digital literacy and skills development, ensuring that the workforce is well-equipped to thrive in a technology-driven economy.

Vice President Shettima was accompanied by a high-ranking delegation, including Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy Minister, Dr. Bosun Tijani, along with regional leaders and senior officials from various ICT organizations. This diverse representation underscores the government’s commitment to harnessing 5G technology for national development.

During the visit, the delegation was hosted at Ericsson’s Imagine Live Studio, where Patrick Johansson, Head of Ericsson Middle East and Africa, provided a demonstration of Ericsson’s 5G capabilities. The two-hour session included discussions on the evolution of technology, spectrum management, standardization, and cybersecurity, showcasing Ericsson’s extensive experience and commitment to Nigeria.

Dr. Bosun Tijani signed the MoU on behalf of the Nigerian government, while Patrick Johansson and Peter Olusoji Ogundele, Head of Ericsson Nigeria, signed for Ericsson. This collaboration is poised to unlock the innovation potential of 5G for Nigerian businesses and citizens, positioning Nigeria for greater digital competitiveness on the global stage.
