Nokia’s latest research underscores a transformative shift in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region’s connectivity landscape, with 5G subscriptions projected to soar to 519 million by 2029. This remarkable growth represents nearly 23 percent of all mobile subscriptions in the region. As the demand for data services escalates, 5G adoption is becoming increasingly critical for communication service providers (CSPs) in the region.
The findings reveal that 60 percent of CSPs in the MEA are embracing 5G technology to drive their digital transformation efforts. While 4G subscriptions are expected to stabilize by 2027, the rise of 5G will significantly enhance network capabilities, offering CSPs new avenues for revenue generation. As CSPs adapt to this shift, they are better positioned to meet the evolving needs of their customers and the market.
According to Mikko Lavanti, Senior Vice President for Mobile Networks in the MEA at Nokia, the region’s future connectivity is heavily reliant on the successful adoption of 5G. Lavanti emphasizes that this transition not only fosters digital transformation but also enables CSPs to tap into new business opportunities. With Nokia’s support, these providers can unlock the full potential of their networks, delivering advanced connectivity solutions crucial for regional development.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is leading the charge, with projections indicating that 90 percent of mobile subscriptions in this sub-region will be powered by 5G by 2029. This growth is largely fueled by substantial government investments in 5G infrastructure and a strong commitment to enhancing connectivity solutions. Such developments position the GCC as a hub for technological advancement and innovation in the region.
Moreover, the data traffic dynamics are expected to shift dramatically. By 2029, 5G and 4G networks will account for over 90 percent of total data traffic in the MEA, with the GCC alone predicted to carry 90 percent of its data traffic on 5G networks. This substantial transition marks a pivotal moment in the region’s digital evolution, driven by the growing reliance on mobile connectivity.
Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is also set to experience significant growth, with its adoption projected to rise from 11 percent in 2022 to 38 percent by 2029. This surge is a response to the increasing demand for faster internet speeds and lower latency, particularly in underserved or remote areas. As the MEA region continues to embrace 5G, it is poised to unlock unparalleled opportunities for connectivity and innovation.
