The World Health Organization (WHO) has responded to the anticipated short rains in Kenya by dispatching 10 tonnes of emergency medical supplies and commodities to five key counties. Valued at approximately Ksh 9.7 million, the supplies are intended to support Kilifi, Homa Bay, Mandera, Turkana, and Kajiado counties. The intervention is designed to enhance the capacity of these regions to handle health challenges, particularly those related to waterborne diseases, which are more likely during the rainy season.
WHO has projected that these supplies will benefit approximately 164,600 people residing in areas vulnerable to disease outbreaks. This initiative is a critical step in ensuring that these communities are prepared and protected against potential health threats posed by the rains.
The Kenya Meteorological Department (Met) has forecasted the onset of short rains from October to December, with expected rains beginning between the third and fourth weeks of October in Central Kenya and Nairobi. This weather pattern is anticipated to influence water levels in the Rift Valley lakes, which could result in flooding in nearby areas.
