MTN Cameroon’s ambition to deploy 5G technology is currently hindered by the absence of a regulatory framework, according to CEO Mitwa Ng’ambi. Speaking during her second anniversary as CEO, Ng’ambi emphasized MTN’s commitment to evolving with technology and providing cutting-edge solutions to consumers. However, she noted that the deployment of 5G remains on hold pending government regulation.
Ng’ambi reiterated MTN’s readiness to introduce 5G as part of the group’s broader strategy to ensure that its technological offerings align with current global trends. She acknowledged that as a technology company, MTN recognizes the opportunities that emerging technologies like 5G can bring to consumers in Cameroon and beyond. However, regulatory delays have slowed the process.
The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications is actively working on developing the necessary regulatory framework to support 5G deployment in Cameroon. Ng’ambi confirmed that MTN is fully supportive of these efforts and is prepared to comply with the regulations once they are in place. She emphasized that MTN is committed to operating within the legal framework and will wait for the green light before announcing any specific 5G plans.
Despite challenges, MTN Cameroon remains at the forefront of connectivity in the country, operating 2G, 3G, and 4G networks that currently cover 97% of the population. Ng’ambi expressed optimism that the introduction of 5G will further enhance MTN’s ability to deliver innovative services, but she stressed that the company’s plans are contingent upon the finalization of regulatory processes.
In 2019, MTN Cameroon requested a 5G testing license from the Telecommunications Regulatory Board, but no response was received, causing a delay in the company’s ambitions to be the first mobile network provider to launch 5G in the country. Ng’ambi remains hopeful that with ongoing efforts, the regulatory hurdles will soon be overcome.
MTN Cameroon’s commitment to technological advancement reflects the company’s vision of connecting more Cameroonians to the digital world. As the regulatory landscape evolves, MTN stands ready to drive forward the next phase of mobile connectivity, ensuring that Cameroon is not left behind in the global digital revolution.
