Kenya is set to revolutionize its digital infrastructure with an ambitious project connecting over 180 national institutions through its electricity power lines. This innovative approach, leveraging existing infrastructure from Kenya Power, aims to accelerate the rollout of its fibre optic network, bypassing the traditional and laborious method of laying fibre in trenches. The initial focus will be on the southwestern counties of Kisii and Nyamira, significantly enhancing connectivity in these regions.
The rollout will see 94 institutions in Kisii and 91 institutions in Nyamira connected through this new last-mile connectivity programme. John Kipchumba Kanui, Principal Secretary of the State Department for ICT and Digital Economy, emphasized the importance of this initiative in empowering local communities. The extension of the fibre optic network is expected to provide better access to education, healthcare, and government services while fostering a conducive environment for business growth.
Tanui highlighted that the project aims to bring high-speed internet to the regions, unlocking new possibilities for digital transformation and connectivity. This development aligns with Kenya’s broader goal of laying an additional 100,000 kilometers of fibre by 2027, positioning the country as a leader in digital infrastructure within East Africa.
Additionally, the government has launched ICT labs at four tertiary institutions in Nyamira as part of its effort to combat high youth unemployment. These labs are designed to equip young people with essential digital skills, helping them secure jobs and explore opportunities in the growing digital economy.
This initiative comes at a critical time for Kenya, which has faced weeks of protests over unemployment and high taxation issues. By advancing its digital capabilities and creating job opportunities, the government aims to address some of the pressing concerns of its citizens and stimulate economic growth.
As Kenya embarks on this transformative journey, the focus will be on leveraging technology to drive development and improve quality of life for its citizens. The project reflects a strategic move towards enhancing digital infrastructure and fostering economic opportunities across the nation.
