Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, has officially been granted city status, marking a significant milestone in its history. President William Ruto presided over the momentous event at the Eldoret Sports Club, where he awarded the city charter, making Eldoret the fifth city in Kenya after Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nakuru. The ceremony was a vibrant celebration of the new city’s rich heritage, featuring cultural exhibitions and traditional dances.
During the event, President Ruto signed the charter alongside Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii, officially sealing Eldoret’s city status. The Head of State emphasized that Eldoret had met all the necessary criteria to be recognized as a city, fulfilling the requirements outlined in the Urban Areas and Cities Act. This development is expected to bring a new era of growth and prosperity to the region.
In addition to granting city status, President Ruto awarded the Order of the Burning Spear (CBS) to several distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to Eldoret’s development. Among the honorees were three-time Diamond League champion Vivian Cheruiyot, former Nominated MP Ezekiel Barngetuny, educationist Paul Boit, and former mayor Joseph Lesiew. Their dedication and achievements have played a crucial role in shaping Eldoret’s legacy.
The municipality’s elevation to city status was endorsed by the Senate, following a report from the Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations. Governor Bii expressed optimism about the future, stating that Eldoret’s new status would attract investors and position the city as a hub for business and investment opportunities. The governor emphasized the importance of showcasing Eldoret on a global stage to maximize its potential.
Eldoret’s journey from a small administrative center in 1908 to a thriving city is a testament to its resilience and growth. Initially settled by South Africans fleeing British rule, the town quickly developed into a bustling center of economic activity. Today, Eldoret is known for its large-scale farming, manufacturing industries, and as a training ground for world-renowned Kenyan athletes.
As Eldoret embraces its new status as a city, the focus now shifts to leveraging this recognition to drive further development and attract global attention. With its rich history, strategic location, and strong economic foundation, Eldoret is poised to become a major player on both the national and international stage.
