Zambia has announced a significant investment of K22 million (US$839,000) to support innovators and inventors in bringing their prototypes to life. This funding is targeted at addressing pressing national challenges, with a particular focus on projects related to energy deficits, climate change, and drought. The government aims to harness creativity and expertise to develop solutions that can effectively tackle these critical issues.
Felix Mutati, the Science and Technology Minister, emphasized the importance of this initiative during the Consultative Workshop on the Development of a Generic Commercialisation and Technology Transfer Framework in Lusaka. He highlighted the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and helping young entrepreneurs turn their ideas into viable products that address societal challenges.
The minister underscored the urgency of addressing the severe drought affecting Zambia, which has been exacerbated by climate change and is compounded by intermittent flooding. Mutati stressed that innovative technologies are essential for mitigating the effects of climate change and improving the resilience of communities.
The workshop, which includes participation from eight African countries, aims to develop frameworks for the commercialization and transfer of technology. This event, organized by the National Science and Technology Council, reflects Zambia’s dedication to promoting science and technology as drivers of economic and environmental sustainability.
