One year after launching Uber Electric Boda in Africa, Uber has seen a remarkable 81% increase in active driver sign-ups. This surge highlights the growing appeal of electric mobility among drivers, driven by the affordability and sustainability of the product. Since its launch in August 2023, the service has led to a 94% increase in trips, making it a popular choice for Nairobi residents.
Uber Electric Boda, with its 80-kilometre range bikes managed by Greenwheels Africa, marks a significant step towards Uber’s global goal of becoming a zero-emissions platform by 2040. Imran Manji, Head of East Africa at Uber, emphasized Kenya’s role as a launching pad for innovation, noting that the introduction of Electric Boda has provided drivers with additional avenues for increased earnings while supporting the country’s sustainability goals.
The timing of this launch aligns perfectly with Kenya’s National Electric Mobility Policy, which aims to create a greener transportation system. With the boda boda sector employing over 1.5 million young people and contributing approximately Kshs. 202 billion annually to the economy, the impact of Uber Electric Boda extends beyond just transportation, contributing to the country’s economic and environmental sustainability.
To further support road safety, Uber has introduced dedicated helmets for passengers and mandated alco-blow tests for drivers at the start and close of daily shifts. These measures ensure that Uber Electric Boda not only promotes green mobility but also prioritizes the safety and well-being of both drivers and passengers.
Greenwheels Africa CEO, Nabil Anjarwalla, proudly shared that in their first year, they have carried over 700,000 passengers and covered more than 12 million kilometres on electric motorcycles. This milestone underscores their commitment to reducing carbon emissions, providing stable employment to drivers, and helping Nairobians navigate the city safely and conveniently.
As Uber Electric Boda expands to Nairobi’s Central Business District, it breaks new ground for two-wheeler mobility products in a historically challenging area. This expansion further solidifies the service’s role in transforming urban mobility in Nairobi and beyond.
