Twenty-five Kenyan students under the Huawei Seeds for Future programme completed an enriching one-week immersion into digital technology skills during an ICT study tour in Shanghai, China. This initiative, which coincided with MWC Shanghai 2024, selects students from Sub-Saharan Africa to equip them with digital skills for innovation and job market readiness.

As part of the tour, the students collaborated on a project named Tech4Good, focusing on leveraging technology to tackle social and environmental issues. Sylvia Jebet of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology distinguished herself by securing second place at the 2024 Leadership Employability Advancement Possibility (LEAP) Summit, outshining over 50 students from the region.

Jebet was celebrated for her exceptional performance in digital content creation, showcasing various sites visited during the tour, including the Huawei Watt Exhibition Hall and the DJI R&D centre in Shenzhen. Her efforts exemplify the programme’s emphasis on hands-on learning and practical application of digital skills.

At MWC Shanghai 2024, Huawei announced an ambitious plan to train an additional 150,000 talents in Sub-Saharan Africa over the next three years. This new goal builds on the company’s initial objective to equip 100,000 people with digital skills by 2025—a target Huawei has already surpassed by 120%, training over 120,000 individuals in the past 26 months.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, Huawei has trained over 18,000 people from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Namibia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, and more. Hover Gao, President of Sub-Saharan Africa at Huawei, highlighted the collaborative efforts with government agencies, academia, and industry that have driven these successes.

Under the LEAP framework, Huawei continues to train its partners in the digital power and cloud ecosystem, offering training and incubation for teachers and hosting job fairs. This initiative underscores Huawei’s commitment to fostering digital talent and sustainable development across Sub-Saharan Africa.
