The International Organization for Migration Kenya (IOM) has teamed up with Kenya Airways (KQ) in a landmark partnership aimed at strengthening efforts against human trafficking. This collaboration will empower Kenya Airways with specialized training and expertise from IOM to enhance its ability to identify, prevent, and respond to human trafficking incidents, while facilitating legal migration pathways.
Chief of Mission at IOM Kenya, Dimanche Sharon, underscored the significance of addressing human trafficking within Africa’s context of a burgeoning youth population and labor needs in destination countries. “Creating safe and regulated migration channels can provide a win-win solution, benefiting both source and destination countries,” Sharon emphasized.
Kenya Airways CEO Allan Kilavuka highlighted the airline’s pivotal role in global transportation, moving over 5 million passengers annually. He emphasized the airline’s commitment to ensuring safe, secure, and dignified travel for all passengers, emphasizing the importance of combating undocumented migration and ensuring dignified movement.
“We have signed a memorandum to collaboratively ensure people move in a safe, secure, and dignified manner,” Kilavuka affirmed. The partnership aligns with Kenya Airways’ mission to uphold high standards of passenger safety and ethical transportation practices.
Human trafficking remains a largely clandestine crime, with 90 cases reported in Kenya in 2022 alone. The partnership between IOM and Kenya Airways aims to bolster efforts in combating this heinous crime by enhancing awareness, training, and operational protocols.
