This year’s Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR-24) has kicked off in Kampala, Uganda, with a pioneering focus on regulating for impact in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), the space sector, and climate change. Hosted by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the event has gathered global regulators to exchange knowledge and experiences on advancing impactful regulation.

Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava, director of the ITU’s telecommunications development division, emphasized the significance of the symposium on the ITU’s blog. He stated, “Global regulators and policymakers will meet over the coming week to exchange knowledge and experiences on advancing regulation for impact.” This highlights the collaborative spirit of GSR-24.

Zavazava explained that “Regulating for impact means defining policy and regulatory measures that chart the course of transformative technologies for positive impact and the good of humanity.” He underscored the role of digital regulators in creating environments where technology and socio-economic development progress hand in hand.

A dedicated AI session will delve into ethical aspects, standards development, and risk mitigation for responsible AI and robotics. This session will address strategies to mitigate risks and create trustworthy AI systems, reflecting the crucial need for ethical AI advancements.

GSR-24 will also explore the burgeoning space economy. The expansion of satellite networks offers new space-based applications that can drive critical economic, business, and societal projects. Participants will consider regulatory measures for an inclusive, safe, and sustainable space economy.

By focusing on transformative technologies and their regulation, GSR-24 aims to develop effective policies that foster innovation while ensuring socio-economic benefits. This symposium represents a pivotal moment for global regulators to shape the future of technology for the greater good.
