A significant milestone in Africa’s digital journey was achieved as ICT and communications ministers across the continent approved the Continental Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy and African Digital Compact. These initiatives aim to unlock Africa’s potential in digital technologies and accelerate its digital transformation.

From June 11 to 13, 2024, more than 130 African ministers and experts gathered virtually for the 2nd extraordinary session of the specialized technical committee on communication and ICT. The session focused on harnessing AI technology and its applications to drive Africa’s digital evolution amidst rapid technological advancements.

The Continental AI Strategy provides guidance to African governments on leveraging artificial intelligence to achieve development goals and enhance people’s well-being. It emphasizes ethical use, risk mitigation, and capitalizing on AI’s vast opportunities for the continent.

Dr. Amani Abou-Zeid, African Union Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy, highlighted Africa’s determination to utilize new technologies for the benefit of its people. He stressed the importance of developing a continent-wide approach to AI that addresses Africa’s unique challenges while promoting economic growth and social progress.

“AI presents tremendous opportunities for positive transformation in Africa,” said Dr. Abou-Zeid. “It is crucial that AI systems are adapted to reflect our diversity, languages, culture, history, and geographical contexts. This inclusive approach will foster an AI ecosystem that is competitive and aligned with Africa’s ambitions.”

The approved strategy outlines key priorities and actions to ensure Africa maximizes the benefits of AI. It aims to create an inclusive AI ecosystem and a competitive African AI market that meets the continent’s realities and aspirations.

“As we aim to create an inclusive AI ecosystem and a competitive African AI market that is adapted to our realities and meets our ambitions, we believe examining and approving this strategy will provide a common vision and path to accelerate responsible AI innovation and adoption in Africa,” added Dr. Abou-Zeid.
