TowerCo of Africa Tanzania (TOA Tanzania) has announced a significant $30 million financing arrangement with British International Investment (BII), the UK’s development finance institution. This funding will enable TOA Tanzania to establish around 200 new telecom sites across the mainland and Zanzibar, reinforcing the company’s mission to bridge the digital divide.

Founded in February 2023, TOA Tanzania focuses on owning and operating passive telecommunications infrastructure that is leased to mobile network carriers. The new sites will significantly enhance coverage, especially in rural areas, connecting up to 600,000 previously isolated individuals. This expansion is a major step towards achieving digital inclusivity in Tanzania.

The ambitious plan includes doubling the size of TOA Tanzania’s site portfolio within its first year of operation. By increasing network coverage, the company aims to support government digitisation efforts and ensure that underprivileged communities benefit from technological advancements.

Innocent Mushi, CEO of TOA Tanzania, highlighted the importance of this investment: “This financing agreement with BII reinforces our commitment to expanding connectivity and bridging the digital divide in Tanzania.” Mushi also emphasized the company’s dedication to environmental protection through the use of renewable energy sources and responsible waste disposal practices in their new sites.

Richard Palmer, Director and Head of Private Debt at BII, commented on the partnership, stating: “Expanding digital infrastructure is critical for fostering sustainable economic development in Tanzania. By focusing on rural areas, TOA Tanzania is not only promoting inclusivity but also ensuring that the benefits of technological advancements reach the most underserved communities.”

This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for TOA Tanzania, as it strives to enhance digital infrastructure and promote sustainable development in the region. The investment from BII underscores the importance of digital connectivity in driving economic growth and improving the quality of life for Tanzanians.
