Kristalina Georgieva has been selected to serve a second term as Managing Director, starting October 1, 2024.
As the current MD since 2019, Georgieva’s strong and agile leadership has steered the IMF through major global shocks, including the unprecedented challenges brought by the pandemic. Her remarkable accomplishments include approving over $360 billion in new financing for 97 countries, providing debt service relief to vulnerable members, and facilitating a historic Special Drawing Rights allocation of $650 billion.
Under Georgieva’s guidance, the IMF introduced innovative financing facilities like the Resilience and Sustainability Facility and the Food Shock Window, demonstrating a commitment to addressing pressing global issues. Additionally, efforts were made to enhance support for the Fund’s poorest members through initiatives such as replenishing the poverty reduction and growth trust and securing a 50% quota increase to bolster permanent resources.
Looking ahead, the IMF Board is confident that Georgieva will continue to prioritize macroeconomic and financial stability while ensuring the Fund adapts to meet the evolving needs of its membership. Her focus on strengthening policy advice, capacity development, and financing underscores the IMF’s commitment to supporting its members effectively.
