Kenya enhances its transport infrastructure with the arrival of fifty new Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) wagons, aimed at bolstering cargo transport along the Chinese-built line. Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen welcomes the wagons, marking the first addition to the SGR fleet since its launch in May 2017.
Additionally, plans are underway for the arrival of 250 more wagons, including specialized refrigerated units, signaling a significant step towards tapping into untapped business potentials and boosting Kenya’s horticultural sector.
Moreover, Kenya’s ambitious expansion plans include extending the SGR to Kisumu, Malaba, and Isiolo by June 2027, with efforts to accommodate passengers with disabilities and enhance cargo transportation efficiency.
However, amidst these developments, the country grapples with debt repayment for the SGR, which continues to impact its forex reserves. Nevertheless, increased revenue generation from the SGR underscores its growing importance in Kenya’s economic landscape.
