The Kenya Ports Authority has announced that plans for the construction of the first multi-purpose berth to serve the Dongo Kundu Special Economic Zones in Mombasa are well underway. This project, to be executed through a Public-Private Partnership, is estimated to cost around $340 million (Sh55.4 billion). The berth is a crucial aspect of the broader Dongo Kundu SEZ project, which aims to establish a free trade zone, free port, and industrial zones to stimulate economic growth and job creation in the Coastal region.
A Master Plan for the SEZ and free port has been developed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), highlighting their involvement in Mombasa Port’s development projects. The proposed Dongo Kundu berth will be 300 meters long with a depth of minus 15 meters, capable of accommodating large vessels. The SEZ, spanning 3000 acres, will encompass various zones including a free port, industrial parks, logistics centers, and tourism facilities.
The SEZ is anticipated to bolster trade, foster manufacturing, and enhance exports, positioning Kenya as a key trade and logistics hub in Eastern and Central Africa. Taifa Gas Company and the East African Tea Traders Association have already commenced projects within the Dongo Kundu SEZ, signaling growing investor interest in the area. With incentives such as tax rebates and streamlined licensing processes, the government aims to attract both local and foreign investors to participate in SEZ developments, aiming for early industrial activity commencement before the initial timeline of 2026.
