Starting in March, Spotify users in Europe will be able to purchase audiobooks and subscription plans directly within the music-streaming app, following the region’s new competition law for Big Tech.
This move enables Spotify to circumvent Apple’s 30% fee for in-app purchases, a longstanding issue between app developers and the tech giant. The Swedish company’s shares rose about 2% as a result. Spotify has been entangled in legal disputes with Apple, alleging that its monthly subscription prices were inflated due to App Store rules.
With the introduction of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates fair treatment of products and services, Spotify anticipates greater transparency in deals and payment options within the EU.
While Apple plans to contest the EU’s decision to subject the entire App Store to digital antitrust regulation, it faces criticism from Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg regarding its fee structure and policies.
Meanwhile, Meta expressed support for increased competition and easier app distribution for developers.
