South African telecommunications provider Telkom has launched Fibre to the Room, a new value-added service designed to improve Wi-Fi coverage across homes by extending fibre connectivity into multiple rooms.
The service is available to qualifying Openserve Fibre customers and uses fibre-linked Wi-Fi access points to create an all-optical in-home network. It aims to address inconsistent Wi-Fi coverage, particularly in larger homes, multi-storey properties and buildings with thick walls, where users may experience weaker signals or slower performance.
Telkom said the service is designed for households with multiple connected devices and growing demands for reliable internet access across home offices, entertainment areas and rooms used for streaming and online gaming.
Caroline Macharia, Executive Home Solutions – Fixed and Broadband at Telkom, said home internet usage has evolved, with a single connection now expected to support work meetings, schoolwork, entertainment, gaming, smart-home devices and multiple users simultaneously.
She said Fibre to the Room gives eligible customers a practical way to extend their existing fibre connection into rooms where reliable connectivity is needed.
The Fibre to the Room 1+1 base solution includes one Main Fibre to the Room Gateway and one Fibre to the Room Edge device. Customers can add more Edge devices depending on their home layout and connectivity requirements, with the solution supporting up to 15 Edge devices in total.
According to Telkom, the service does not increase the speed of a customer’s existing fibre package. Instead, it improves how the connection is distributed throughout the home, providing more consistent Wi-Fi 6 coverage, lower latency for activities such as gaming and streaming, and improved connectivity for smart-home devices.
To mark the launch, Telkom is offering free installation to the first 200 qualifying customers who sign up, with potential savings starting from R3,000. The final saving will depend on the selected configuration and installation requirements. The promotion is available while allocations last and is subject to applicable terms and conditions.
Fibre to the Room is available to qualifying Consumer and small and medium-sized business (SMB) customers with an Openserve Postpaid Fibre service. Customers can pay once-off or select a 12-, 24- or 36-month payment term.
Availability is subject to credit approval, technical feasibility and address-level footprint verification. Professional installation is currently offered in selected areas of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town.
