Nigeria has inaugurated the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative Implementation Taskforce (NSCI-ITF), marking a new phase in the country’s efforts to move from developing its sovereign cloud framework to coordinated implementation.
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is coordinating the National Sovereign Cloud Initiative (NSCI), which provides a framework for strengthening Nigeria’s digital sovereignty and developing a secure, resilient, competitive and investment-ready cloud and digital infrastructure ecosystem.
The initiative is designed to strengthen the protection and assurance of critical digital assets while supporting innovation, indigenous technology capacity, private-sector investment and access to global technology.
According to NITDA, the inauguration follows the development and launch of the NSCI’s regulatory, technical, assurance and investment instruments. These instruments establish a foundation for cloud adoption, data governance, infrastructure assurance, technical standards and investment across Nigeria’s cloud and data-centre ecosystem.
The newly inaugurated NSCI-ITF will serve as the principal multi-stakeholder mechanism for coordinating implementation of the initiative. Its responsibilities will include regulatory concurrence and alignment, institutional coordination, operationalisation of NSCI instruments, addressing cross-cutting implementation challenges and monitoring progress.
The taskforce will also support cloud adoption, infrastructure development, indigenous capacity building and investment mobilisation as Nigeria works to strengthen its domestic digital infrastructure.
NITDA said the taskforce will complement, rather than replace, the statutory responsibilities of participating regulators and government institutions. Each institution will continue exercising its responsibilities within its respective legal mandate, while the taskforce focuses on improving regulatory coherence and coordinated implementation.
The NSCI is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s national digital infrastructure resilience, expand domestic cloud and data-centre capacity, increase indigenous participation and attract sustainable private-sector investment.
The initiative also aims to position Nigeria as a trusted destination for cloud and digital infrastructure investment across Africa, while ensuring that critical digital assets and services are supported by secure and resilient infrastructure.
With the inauguration of the NSCI-ITF, Nigeria’s sovereign cloud programme is moving into a phase focused on implementation, institutional alignment, investment and measurable national outcomes.
The development comes as cloud computing and data infrastructure become increasingly important to digital government, artificial intelligence, financial services, enterprise technology and the broader digital economy.
