Sawa Energy, a renewable energy company operating in Uganda and Rwanda, has successfully raised EUR 2.5 million (US$2.8 million) in equity investment from ElectriFI, the EU-funded Electrification Financing Initiative managed by EDFI Management Company. The investment is aimed at accelerating the company’s expansion and advancing the deployment of solar photovoltaic (PV) and Backup Energy Storage Solutions (BESS) for commercial and industrial (C&I) clients across Uganda.
This funding marks a significant milestone in Sawa Energy’s journey toward transforming access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy in East Africa. By targeting the commercial and industrial sectors, the company addresses a major pain point for businesses struggling with high electricity costs and unreliable grid power. The European Union, through the ElectriFI initiative, has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting renewable energy adoption and supporting local enterprises that contribute to sustainable industrial growth and carbon reduction.
Founded in 2021, Sawa Energy specializes in financing, building, and operating solar and battery projects tailored to meet each client’s specific energy demands. The company’s innovative model offers long-term energy service contracts ranging from 10 to 25 years, with rates lower than traditional grid tariffs. Beyond providing clean energy, Sawa Energy ensures system reliability through comprehensive operations and maintenance services—helping clients achieve consistent power supply, reduced operational costs, and improved productivity.
The investment from ElectriFI will enhance Sawa Energy’s capital structure, enabling it to attract further institutional investors and lenders to support its ambitious growth plans. As highlighted by Rodrigo Madrazo, CEO of EDFI Management Company, the partnership aims to accelerate the shift from diesel dependency to sustainable solar solutions, delivering both economic and environmental benefits. This transition will play a crucial role in driving clean energy adoption while empowering businesses to become more resilient and competitive in their operations.
Through this milestone, Sawa Energy not only strengthens its role as a key player in Africa’s clean energy transition but also reinforces the EU’s broader commitment to the Africa-EU Green Energy Initiative under the Global Gateway Africa-EU Investment Package. As Samuel Kaufman, CEO and Co-founder of Sawa Energy, emphasized, the partnership with ElectriFI will allow the company to expand its impact, helping businesses across East Africa reduce emissions, lower energy costs, and build a sustainable future powered by clean energy.
