Anda Secures $3.4M To Revolutionize Motorcycle Transport

Angolan mobility startup Anda has raised $3.4 million (€3 million) in seed funding to revolutionize the motorcycle taxi industry in Angola. The funding round was co-led by European venture capital firms Breega and Speedinvest, marking a significant milestone for the Luanda-based company. Founded in 2022 by Sergio Tati and Joerg Nuehrmann, Anda is building a comprehensive technology platform designed to formalize and modernize one of Angola’s most critical yet informal transportation sectors.

Anda’s innovative model combines a “drive-to-own” asset financing system for motorcycle taxi drivers with a digital ride-hailing and delivery platform for customers. This dual approach not only enables drivers to gain ownership of their motorcycles but also integrates them into a more structured and financially inclusive ecosystem. The startup aims to address long-standing challenges in the mobility market, including the absence of regulation, lack of access to credit, and limited safety infrastructure, all of which have hindered the sector’s growth.

Angola’s motorcycle taxi industry represents a massive untapped opportunity. With an estimated 1.2 million drivers nationwide—600,000 of whom operate in Luanda alone—the market remains largely informal, valued at approximately $5 billion. Most drivers work without licenses, training, or insurance, and crucially, without vehicle ownership. Anda’s solution directly tackles this issue by empowering drivers to become micro-entrepreneurs, thereby unlocking access to formal financial services and improving overall livelihood standards.

At the core of Anda’s offering is its “drive-to-own” system, through which the company provides motorcycles equipped with GPS tracking, insurance, and safety gear. Drivers undergo formal training and repay the cost of their motorcycles through their daily earnings on the platform. Upon completion of the repayment, they gain full ownership—an achievement that boosts income stability and promotes financial inclusion among an often underserved workforce. The company’s app and proprietary backend system further streamline operations by allowing digital payments, ride bookings, and loan management, creating a seamless and transparent experience for both drivers and customers.

Anda’s model not only redefines transportation in Angola but also serves as a blueprint for formalizing mobility ecosystems across sub-Saharan Africa, a region where the motorcycle taxi market is estimated to be worth as much as $80 billion. By integrating technology, financing, and safety, Anda is positioning itself at the forefront of Africa’s mobility transformation. The startup’s success underscores the power of innovation in addressing local challenges while unlocking sustainable economic opportunities for millions.
