Microsoft has announced an expansion of its Sovereign Cloud capabilities, introducing new tools and services designed to give governments and enterprises greater control over how they deploy, manage and secure cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

The announcement was made during Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella’s keynote at the Microsoft Frontier Tour in Paris. The globally applicable capabilities offer organisations across the Middle East additional options for advancing AI adoption while addressing data protection, security and operational requirements.

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into government services, business operations and critical infrastructure, digital sovereignty is becoming a broader priority. Organisations must consider where their data is stored, who can access and operate their systems, how AI workloads are governed and whether essential services can continue during connectivity disruptions.

Microsoft’s expanded offering is designed to give organisations flexibility in choosing the level of control required for different workloads, rather than applying a single approach across their entire technology environment.

A key development is the new Sovereign Control Panel, which will enter public preview at Microsoft Ignite. The tool will provide customers with a unified view of their sovereignty posture, helping them assess requirements, identify gaps and manage relevant controls.

Microsoft is also expanding its Sovereign Private Cloud capabilities, built on Azure Local. These capabilities will enable more AI, data and application services to operate within customer-controlled environments, including supported scenarios where connectivity is unavailable.

The expansion also covers AI development and deployment. Microsoft Foundry Local will enable AI models and inference to run locally, while additional confidential computing, data management and developer capabilities will give organisations more options for protecting sensitive workloads and maintaining operational control.

Microsoft is further expanding its sovereign partner ecosystem to help customers address requirements specific to their industries and markets.

For governments and enterprises across the Middle East, where AI is increasingly central to national digital strategies and economic development, these capabilities offer additional flexibility to adopt advanced technologies while maintaining control over critical systems and data.

The developments form part of Microsoft’s broader investment in sovereign cloud options, combining cloud innovation with security, resilience and operational independence to support responsible AI deployment at scale.
