Absa has launched an institutional digital asset custody proposition for South African clients, becoming the first African bank to offer such a service, according to the bank.
Absa Digital Asset Custody will provide institutional and large business banking clients with secure safekeeping, administration and transfer services for digital assets within a regulated banking environment.
The offering extends Absa’s existing custody capabilities into digital assets, combining specialist technology and infrastructure with governance, security controls, compliance frameworks, financial crime controls and operational resilience.
The service is designed for institutional participants, including asset managers, non-bank financial institutions, corporates and treasury functions, as well as other clients requiring institutional-grade custody. Absa said the proposition is not currently available as a retail cryptocurrency service.
Rob Downes, Head of Digital Assets at Absa CIB, said the bank sees digital assets as an important part of the future of financial services and is developing capabilities to support clients as the market evolves.
The custody service forms part of Absa’s broader digital asset strategy, which includes blockchain-enabled financial services and next-generation financial market infrastructure. The bank said secure custody could provide a foundation for future opportunities involving tokenisation, digital securities, stablecoins and digital payments.
Absa said its experience in traditional custody has informed the development of safeguards and operational processes for managing digital assets, allowing institutional clients to explore emerging markets within a regulated banking environment.
The service is currently available to South African clients, while Absa said it is exploring opportunities to extend the capability to other African markets where regulatory frameworks and client demand support its introduction.
The launch comes as financial institutions across Africa and other markets explore how regulated infrastructure can support the integration of digital assets into formal financial systems.
