The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening regulatory collaboration with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) as Nigeria continues to advance its digital economy and data governance framework. NITDA Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi made the commitment during a high-level courtesy visit to the NDPC Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Vincent Olatunji, at the Commission’s headquarters.
Abdullahi commended the NDPC for its progress since its establishment and highlighted NITDA’s role in pioneering Nigeria’s data privacy framework. He noted that as digital transformation accelerates, stronger inter-agency collaboration remains essential to protecting citizens’ data, building digital trust and supporting sustainable economic growth. He reaffirmed NITDA’s continued strategic support for the NDPC, stressing the importance of ensuring that Nigeria’s data governance standards remain aligned with global best practices.
Olatunji expressed appreciation to NITDA for its continued support, particularly during the NDPC’s transition from an internal unit within the Agency to an independent regulatory commission. He also reflected on the development of Nigeria’s privacy and data protection framework, from the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) to the enactment of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDP Act) 2023. He described NITDA’s ongoing partnership as a key part of the progress made in strengthening the country’s privacy and data protection landscape.
The meeting ended with both institutions reaffirming their commitment to closer integration and continued cooperation towards building a safe, secure and resilient digital future for Nigeria. The collaboration is expected to support the country’s efforts to create a trusted digital environment that encourages innovation, investment and inclusive growth.
