The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has engaged Huawei on potential technology solutions aimed at addressing connectivity challenges and expanding digital access in underserved rural communities across Malawi.
The engagement, shared by Joshua William Kamanga, Fixed Network Solutions and Product Manager at Huawei, focused on ICT solutions designed to make connectivity more affordable, scalable and accessible to communities that remain underserved by traditional telecommunications infrastructure.
Among the solutions presented was Huawei’s Rural Link, a compact telecommunications site that integrates key network components into a pole-based structure. The solution combines solar power, radio equipment, microwave and baseband technology, with the potential to reduce deployment costs in smaller communities where conventional network infrastructure may not be commercially viable.
The discussions also highlighted the importance of affordable smartphones in advancing digital inclusion. Huawei noted that expanding network coverage alone may not deliver meaningful connectivity if consumers cannot afford the devices required to access internet services.
With internet penetration in Malawi remaining relatively low, the engagement explored how technology, collaboration and more efficient use of resources could help accelerate digital inclusion and extend connectivity to more communities.
Huawei said it remains committed to working with the Malawian government, regulators, operators and other stakeholders to support the country’s digital transformation and expand access to opportunities created by the digital economy.
The engagement comes as Malawi continues to address its digital divide, particularly in rural and underserved areas where high infrastructure costs and limited commercial viability can make traditional network deployment challenging.
Solutions that combine lower-cost infrastructure, renewable energy and affordable devices could provide additional options for expanding connectivity while supporting broader participation in Malawi’s digital economy.
