Egypt has been elected to chair both the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Governance Working Group and the Quantum Computing Working Group under the Arab Permanent Committee for AI and Emerging Technologies, reinforcing its leadership in shaping regional policies on advanced technologies.

The appointments were confirmed during the committee’s second founding meeting held in Tunisia, where representatives from Arab member states and regional and international observer organisations met to strengthen cooperation on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. The committee operates under the Arab Telecommunications and Information Council of Ministers (ATICM), following its establishment during the council’s 29th session in Egypt in January 2026.

As chair of the AI Governance Working Group, Egypt will lead the development of a regional AI governance framework, establish technical governance tools and create an advisory mechanism to support implementation of the Arab Charter for AI Ethics. The country will also promote knowledge sharing among member states and strengthen regional coordination on AI-related issues in international policy discussions.

Egypt will also head the Quantum Computing Working Group, overseeing the development of a regional quantum computing strategy, supporting research and practical applications, strengthening expertise in the field and exploring opportunities in areas such as cybersecurity while monitoring global technological developments.

The Arab Permanent Committee for AI and Emerging Technologies is responsible for advancing regional cooperation on AI, innovation and digital transformation, while promoting capacity building, scientific research and unified Arab positions on emerging technology issues. Egypt’s election to chair two of its key working groups further strengthens the country’s role in driving regional digital transformation and technological innovation.
