The Africa Deep Tech Foundation (ADTF) has launched the 2026 Africa Deep Tech Challenge, introducing this year’s theme, “The Laptop LLM Challenge,” to encourage the development of offline artificial intelligence solutions built specifically for Africa.

The competition challenges engineers, researchers, startups and AI innovators to develop large language models (LLMs) capable of running entirely offline on standard laptops with just 8GB of RAM, removing the need for cloud connectivity and high-performance computing infrastructure.

The initiative aims to tackle key barriers to AI adoption across Africa, including unreliable internet access, high cloud computing costs and inconsistent electricity supply. By promoting AI models that run efficiently on existing hardware, ADTF hopes to make advanced AI more accessible for schools, healthcare providers, businesses and communities across the continent.

According to ADTF Convener Emeka Afigbo, true technological independence requires AI systems that operate locally rather than relying on remote cloud infrastructure. The challenge seeks to demonstrate that secure, practical and high-performing AI can run on everyday laptops already in use across Africa.

The competition has attracted support from major players in Africa’s technology ecosystem, including AI Africa XPrize and Future Africa. Winning teams will share a prize pool of more than $20,000, secure entry into the $10 million AI Africa XPrize competition and participate in a six-month scale-up residency programme offering mentorship, commercialization support and investor access.

Applications for the first stage close on August 25, 2026, with participants expected to develop resource-efficient AI models that showcase Africa’s ability to build globally competitive technologies tailored to local realities.
