Rwanda has officially begun routing nearly all domestic digital payments through eKash, its national payment platform, marking a major milestone in the country’s journey toward a more connected and cashless digital economy.
Effective 14 July, the platform now processes bank-to-bank, bank-to-wallet, wallet-to-bank and wallet-to-wallet transactions through a single national payment infrastructure developed by RSwitch in December 2025.
eKash acts as a central payment switch, receiving transfer instructions from financial institutions and securely routing funds to the intended bank or mobile money operator. By providing a unified payment infrastructure, the platform eliminates the need for banks, fintechs and payment providers to maintain multiple bilateral integrations.
The platform supports transactions of up to RWF10 million (approximately US$6,800) per transfer. While the maximum platform fee is capped at RWF20 (around US$0.014), participating financial institutions retain the flexibility to determine customer pricing and transaction limits.
The move is expected to improve payment efficiency, reduce transaction failures and strengthen interoperability across Rwanda’s financial ecosystem while supporting the country’s broader ambition of building a modern, inclusive and cashless digital economy.
