MTN Nigeria is strengthening its commitment to child online safety, announcing new measures to protect children from threats such as cyberbullying, harmful content, stalking, and scams. This bold step underscores the company’s dedication to ensuring that young people can enjoy the opportunities of the digital world while being shielded from its dangers.

The telecom giant reinforced this commitment at its first youth-led safety event, organized under the Help Children Be Children (HCBC) campaign, its flagship child online safety initiative. The campaign focuses on promoting positive digital habits among teenagers and young people, equipping them to navigate the online world more safely.

The event, hosted at MTN’s Lagos headquarters, provided a platform for honest discussions on key issues like online exploitation, mental health, and the importance of safer online engagement. It also brought together parents, educators, and child advocates, creating a collective voice to champion stronger protections for children in Nigeria’s digital space.

As part of its awareness efforts, MTN has partnered with MTV Base to create “Room of Safety,” a 10-episode video series that premiered on July 20, 2025. Through engaging, youth-driven storytelling, the series aims to raise awareness and empower young people with the knowledge and tools needed to stay safe online. This collaboration highlights MTN’s commitment to using creative platforms that resonate with young audiences.

The urgency of this initiative is backed by a 2024 IPSOS study commissioned by MTN, which revealed that more than 70% of Nigerian children between 8 and 17 have internet access. Among surveyed youth in Lagos, 32% admitted to speaking with strangers online, 23% shared personal details, and 6% reported harassment. Shockingly, only 36% of those affected had access to psychological support, underscoring the critical need for stronger interventions.

In response, MTN Nigeria is not only raising awareness but also strengthening its safeguards. The company is working with law enforcement, blocking access to child sexual abuse materials, and supporting public reporting of harmful online content through the Internet Watch Foundation portal. By doing so, MTN continues to show leadership in protecting children and young adults, ensuring they grow in a safer, healthier online environment.
