The Cardano Constitutional Convention officially launched on December 5th in Nairobi and Buenos Aires, marking the beginning of a pivotal three-day event. This event, made possible through the collaboration of Intersect, a member-based organization for the Cardano ecosystem, and Input Output, a blockchain infrastructure research and engineering firm, sets the stage for shaping the future of Cardano.

The event brings together elected delegates from around the world to discuss and define the future governance of Cardano, a blockchain known for its scalability, sustainability, and interoperability. This gathering underscores Africa’s significant role in Cardano’s mission, with one fifth of the 120 delegates representing the continent. These delegates were chosen from over 1,200 participants in more than 60 workshops across 50 countries, ensuring that voices from diverse regions influence the blockchain’s future development.

The decision to host part of the convention in Nairobi highlights the importance of Africa in the blockchain ecosystem. This region has been instrumental in advancing Cardano’s global outreach. The inclusion of delegates from Africa ensures that communities poised to benefit the most from blockchain technology are well-represented in shaping the blockchain’s future.

Charles Hoskinson, Co-Founder of Cardano and CEO of Input Output, shared his perspective on the significance of this moment. He reflected on how the Cardano journey began as an ambitious experiment nearly a decade ago and has since evolved into a global movement that is reshaping industries and empowering communities. Hoskinson emphasized that the Cardano project is not just about blockchain technology; it is about creating a resilient and inclusive system that has the potential to revolutionize governance, finance, and society.

Jack Briggs, Intersect Ecosystem Director, highlighted the importance of the African Cardano community. He stated that Nairobi’s role as a host city serves as a testament to the incredible talent and dedication within the region. Briggs emphasized that the goal is not only to build technology but also to create a decentralized governance system that empowers individuals and transforms lives globally.

At the heart of the convention is the creation of a governance model for Cardano, which includes decentralized representatives (DReps), a decentralized treasury, and on-chain voting mechanisms. The goal is to establish a foundational constitution that reflects the consensus of the global Cardano community. This model of liquid democracy combined with a constitutional republic is set to redefine decentralized governance and establish a new standard in blockchain decision-making.
