MTN Appoints 4 Directors to its Fintech, Bayobab Boards

MTN Group has announced the appointment of four non-executive directors to enhance its MTN Group Fintech and Bayobab businesses. Herman Bosman has been named independent chairman of MTN Group Fintech, bringing his extensive experience from his tenure as CEO of Rand Merchant Investment Holdings and RMB Holdings. Bosman’s role will begin on July 1, 2024, and he is expected to leverage his deep understanding of the financial services industry to advance MTN’s fintech strategy.

Joining Bosman on the MTN Group Fintech board are Nicky Newton-King and Nosipho Molope. Newton-King, a former CEO of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, will contribute her substantial expertise in legal, business, and capital markets starting September 1, 2024. Molope, with her background in MTN operations and as former CFO of the Financial Services Board in South Africa, will also join the board from September 1 and will chair the Audit and Risk Committee.

Jens Schulte-Bockum, former MTN Group chief operating officer, has been appointed non-executive chairman of Bayobab, MTN’s next-generation digital services company, effective September 1. Schulte-Bockum’s experience in digital infrastructure across Europe and Africa will be instrumental in guiding Bayobab’s strategic direction.

Ralph Mupita, MTN Group President and CEO, emphasized that these appointments align with the company’s Ambition 2025 strategy, which focuses on accelerating growth, completing structural separations, and integrating value-adding strategic partners. The new directors are expected to play a key role in driving MTN’s fintech and digital infrastructure initiatives forward.

These strategic appointments reflect MTN’s commitment to fostering innovation and expanding its fintech services to improve digital solutions across Africa. By bringing in these seasoned professionals, MTN aims to strengthen its position as a leader in the continent’s digital transformation.
