Dr. Faustine Ndugulile Has been Nominated as WHO Africa Director

Dr. Faustine Engelbert Ndugulile of Tanzania has been nominated as the next Regional Director for the World Health Organization (WHO) African Region, succeeding Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, who has led the region with distinction over the past decade. This historic nomination was decided by African Member States during the Seventy-fourth session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa held in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, reflecting strong support for Dr. Ndugulile’s leadership and vision.

The selection process saw Dr. Ndugulile emerging as the preferred candidate among other notable nominees, including Dr. Boureima Hama Sambo of Niger, Dr. Ibrahima Socé Fall of Senegal, and Dr. Richard Mihigo of Rwanda. Dr. Ndugulile’s nomination will be formally submitted for appointment by the 156th session of the WHO Executive Board in February 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland, marking the next critical step in this transition. His tenure will begin thereafter, with a five-year term that allows for the possibility of reappointment once.

In his acceptance remarks, Dr. Ndugulile expressed his deep gratitude and commitment to advancing the health and well-being of the people of Africa. He emphasized his dedication to collaborating with Member States to build a healthier and more resilient region. “I’m truly honoured and humbled to be elected to the position of WHO Regional Director for Africa,” said Dr. Ndugulile, reaffirming his readiness to work collectively to tackle the region’s health challenges.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, extended his congratulations to Dr. Ndugulile, praising his vision and dedication that resonated with the Member States. Dr. Tedros also acknowledged the significant contributions of the other candidates and thanked Dr. Moeti for her outstanding leadership, which has set a strong foundation for continued progress in the region. He affirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting Dr. Ndugulile throughout his tenure.

As the outgoing Regional Director, Dr. Moeti also extended her congratulations and best wishes to Dr. Ndugulile.
