Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are poised to significantly accelerate progress towards achieving the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), according to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). Zhao Xiaolei, Head of UNIDO ITPO, highlighted at MWC24 Shanghai that digital transformation offers immense potential for creating value through job creation, economic improvement, and fostering harmonious societies and environments.
Ms. Xiaolei emphasized that UNIDO is developing an industry competitive index under the UN 2030 agenda, which will evaluate 169 factors, with over 130 of these factors directly or indirectly impacted by digital transformation. She pointed out that more than 60% of intellectual property rights are generated in the industrial and manufacturing sectors, and over 80% in green technologies, underscoring the critical role of technological upgrades in advancing industrial revolution, innovation, and talent development.
She further stressed the importance of symbiotic partnerships along industry and supply chains to bring together key players, including policymakers. UNIDO has forged a strategic partnership with Huawei to enhance technology adoption and advance the SDGs. Huawei’s role in this partnership is crucial in promoting both green and digital industry transformations, focusing on creating reliable, stable, and accessible infrastructures.
Ms. Xiaolei also highlighted the launch of the Global Alliance on Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Manufacturing (AIM-Global) in collaboration with Huawei. This initiative, unveiled at the World AI Conference in Shanghai, aims to promote the responsible and sustainable application of artificial intelligence in the industrial sector. AIM-Global seeks to unite governments, international organizations, and industry leaders to leverage AI for inclusive and sustainable industrial development.
UNIDO’s collaboration with Huawei represents a significant step towards harnessing the transformative potential of AI to drive progress across various industries. The initiative is designed to foster innovation and ensure that technological advancements contribute positively to sustainable development goals.
