Philip Thigo is One of Three Kenyans Honored by Mozilla

Philip Thigo has been honored as one of the 25 recipients of The 2nd Annual Rise25 Awards by Mozilla. These prestigious awards recognize individuals who are leading the next wave of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by upholding principles of responsibility, inclusivity, and human dignity. This year’s ceremony will take place on the evening of August 13 at the Convention Centre in Dublin, Ireland.

Thigo, representing Kenya in the Advocates category, is among six distinguished Africans who are celebrated for their efforts in ensuring AI development is ethical and transparent. This category includes policymakers, activists, and public thinkers who are committed to translating complex AI concepts for broader understanding. Thigo’s selection underscores his significant contribution to the ethical advancement of AI in Kenya.

In addition to Thigo, Kathleen Siminyu has been recognized under the Builders Category. Siminyu’s work focuses on the technical and ethical construction of AI systems, ensuring that the technology is secure, reliable, and accessible. This category honors engineers and data scientists who are dedicated to developing trustworthy AI infrastructure and tools that advance societal progress.

Angela Lungati, the third Kenyan honoree, has been awarded under the Change Agents category. Lungati’s role involves diversifying AI by amplifying the voices of historically marginalized communities. As a community leader and activist, Lungati’s efforts are instrumental in ensuring that AI development is inclusive and serves all segments of society.

Mark Surman, President of Mozilla, emphasized the value of diverse collaboration in driving groundbreaking innovations. Surman highlighted that Mozilla’s approach to open-source innovation, online privacy, and trustworthy AI has been foundational in fostering global movements and creating a future-oriented Internet.

The Rise25 Awards build on the success of last year’s event in Berlin, celebrating advances in creating a trustworthy Internet. The recognition of Thigo, Siminyu, and Lungati reflects the global commitment to responsible AI development and the importance of diverse voices in shaping the future of technology.
