Equity Bank Group has announced a landmark Sh2.8 billion scholarship fund aimed at supporting 113 students admitted to top global universities. This significant initiative is part of the Equity Leadership Program (ELP), the bank’s social arm dedicated to fostering educational excellence.
The scholarship will benefit scholars who have secured admissions to 71 prestigious international universities across 22 countries. Notable institutions include Harvard University and Amherst College in the USA, as well as the University of Debrecen in Hungary, among others.
The beneficiaries include 82 students from Kenya, 21 from Rwanda, 8 from Uganda, and 2 from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Each undergraduate scholar will receive an airlift token of Sh200,000 to assist with their transition to studying abroad.
Mwangi, a key figure in the program, encouraged the scholars to build strong networks and innovate to address community challenges. He emphasized that overcoming obstacles and finding new solutions would be their greatest asset.
Since its inception in 1998, ELP has supported approximately 23,825 university scholars. Mwangi highlighted that by contributing ideas and solutions, the scholars could play a vital role in enhancing Africa’s economic potential, expanding markets, and accelerating technology adoption.
This scholarship fund represents a significant investment in the future leaders of Africa, aiming to empower them to drive trade, investment, and technological advancement across the continent.
