Nation Media Group (NMG) bid farewell to its Chief Executive Officer, Stephen Gitagama, who is stepping down after 17 years of dedicated service. His last working day at the media house is July 31, marking the end of an era of transformative leadership.
Mr. Gitagama joined NMG in September 2007 as Group Finance Director and rose to Group CEO in June 2018. Under his stewardship, NMG expanded its digital presence, diversified its content offerings, and strengthened its role in shaping public discourse across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda.
In his farewell address, Mr. Gitagama emphasized the importance of journalistic integrity and independence, urging staff to maintain high standards of unbiased and accurate reporting. He expressed pride in the group’s achievements and confidence in its future success.
Richard Tobiko, NMG’s Chief Financial Officer, will assume the role of CEO in an acting capacity starting August 1, as announced by Board Chairman Wilfred Kiboro. This transition marks a new chapter in NMG’s journey, with Tobiko poised to continue driving the company’s strategic initiatives.
During his tenure, Mr. Gitagama led the development of NMG’s Digital North Star strategy and contributed to the group’s thought leadership through signature conferences like the Kusi Ideas Festival and The Nation Leadership Forum. His leadership was instrumental in navigating the complexities of digital transformation.
