According to recent data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), revenue generated by Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) freight services saw a notable 3% increase in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year. This growth in revenue is particularly significant given a slight decrease in freight haulage, demonstrating the SGR’s efficiency and financial resilience in challenging times.

Despite handling 1.3 million tonnes of freight compared to 1.5 million tonnes in Q1 2023, the SGR maintained robust revenue performance. The KNBS report highlights the railway’s continued importance in facilitating trade and logistics across Kenya, contributing to economic stability and efficiency.

In terms of passenger services, the SGR transported 531,700 passengers during the quarter, down from 597,500 in Q1 2023. The statistics underscore the railway’s ongoing role in providing safe and reliable transport options for travelers between Nairobi and Mombasa.

Looking back at 2023, the SGR averaged 227,352 passengers monthly, highlighting its consistent role in Kenya’s transportation landscape. This data reaffirms the railway’s crucial contribution to connecting major cities and supporting tourism and business travel within the country.

In terms of cargo volumes, the SGR facilitated the transport of over 5 million tonnes between Nairobi and Mombasa in 2023, marking an increase from 4.5 million tonnes in 2022. This growth reflects the railway’s efficiency in handling increasing trade volumes and supporting Kenya’s economic development goals.

The SGR, built with Chinese expertise, continues to play a pivotal role in Kenya’s infrastructure, enhancing connectivity and operational efficiency. Its ability to adapt and grow amidst varying economic conditions underscores its importance as a key driver of Kenya’s logistical and transportation capabilities.
